What is IRS Form 4868?

Form 4868 is an IRS form that you file if you need a 6-month extension (or 4-months if you are outside the country) to file your individual income tax returns.

To get the extra 6 months, you must:

  1. Estimate your tax liability with the information you have
  2. Report the estimate on line 4 of Form 4868
  3. Submit Form 4868 by the regular due date.

Form 4868 extends the deadline to file returns. It does NOT extend the tax payment deadline. You aren’t still expected to make a payment of the tax you estimate as due. If you don’t pay on time, you’ll owe interest and may be charged with penalties.
