File Your Partnership Tax Extension Online
With Form 7004

If your partnership return (Form 1065) is not ready yet, file Form 7004 by the original due date and get 6 more months to submit Form 1065.

What Is a Partnership Tax Extension?

A partnership tax extension gives a partnership extra time to submit Form 1065, U.S. Return of Partnership Income.

Form 1065 reports what the business earned, its deductible expenses, and each partner’s share of the business’s profits, losses, credits and deductions. The partnership itself rarely pays federal income tax on its income. Partners pick it up on their own returns instead.

When the numbers are not final by the due date, filing Form 7004 can buy some time. Form 7004 for partnership returns carries extension code 09, which tells the IRS the request covers Form 1065.

A complete and timely request gives the partnership 6 extra months to file Form 1065.

A multi-member LLC follows this same route when the IRS treats it as a partnership, and it files Form 1065. An LLC that elected to be taxed as a corporation files a different return and uses a different code.

What Is the Partnership Extension Deadline for TY 2026?

Form 7004 is due on the same day as Form 1065. A domestic partnership files Form 1065 by the 15th day of the third month after its tax year closes. If that day lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the deadline rolls to the next business day.

For TY2026, the calendar-year date does not shift. The IRS Form 7004 due date schedule lists March 15, 2027, for partnerships with a tax period ending in December of TY 2026. When filed on time and accepted, Form 7004 then extends Form 1065 filing deadline to September 15, 2027.

Fiscal year15th day of month 3 after year-end15th day of month 9 after year-end

Send Form 7004 before the Form 1065 due date is crossed. A late request does not restore the deadline. IRS disaster relief can shift partnership dates in a declared area.

A partnership tax extension only moves the filing deadline. Most partnership income flows through to partners, yet some amounts are owed at the entity level. Pay those by the original due date.

One group has its own schedule. A partnership that keeps its books and records outside the United States and Puerto Rico has until the 15th day of the sixth month to file and pay, with no Form 7004 needed. If that partnership still needs more time, checking box 4 on Form 7004 extends the filing deadline by 3 months.

When Should You File Form 7004 for Your Partnership?

File when Form 1065 is required and the details are not settled. An extension protects the filing deadline while allocations and partner reporting are finished. It does not alter the tax year, and it does not touch what each partner owes.

Partnerships usually reach for Form 7004 when:

  • Closing entries, reconciliations, or depreciation schedules are still open
  • Capital accounts, ownership changes, guaranteed payments, or special allocations need a second look
  • A Schedule K-1 from another entity or investment has not arrived yet
  • Schedule K-1 or Schedule K-3 figures for the partners are not final
  • A first-year, final-year, short-year, or fiscal-year filing needs the period confirmed

The Schedule K-1 point is worth a moment. Treasury Regulation 1.6031(b)-1T sets the furnishing date as the day Form 1065 is due, counting extensions. So a valid Form 1065 extension moves the partnership's K-1 deadline. It gives partners no extra time on Form 1040 or Form 1120.

What Do You Need to File a Partnership Extension Form?

Form 7004 is short. It is also unforgiving about identity details, so gather these first.

What to collectWhy it matters
Legal business name and addressMust match what the IRS has on file
Employer Identification Number (EIN)Ties the request to the right partnership
Return type and codeForm 1065 uses code 09
Tax year datesMarks the filing as calendar year or fiscal year
Short-year reasonRequired when the period runs under 12 months
Tentative total taxYour estimate of what is owed, or zero
Payments and refundable creditsAmounts already paid or available
Balance dueWhat remains after credits and payments

Check the name and EIN twice. The IRS states that a mismatched name or a wrong identifying number leaves you without a valid extension. Code 09 and the tax period deserve the same look.

Entity-level amounts do come up for partnerships. Estimate carefully and pay by the original date. Late payments draw a penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax each month, capped at 25%, plus interest from the applicable payment due date.
